Carbon dioxide removal via direct air capture and storage is the main focus of Climeworks.
However, air-captured CO2 can also be used as a sustainable raw material for many useful applications. For example, the CO2 can be used to create renewable fuels and materials, a process called power-to-x, or PtX. For part of the transportation industry (especially aviation and shipping) such renewable, carbon-neutral fuels will be crucial to reach their emission targets. Climeworks is involved in several projects in the PtX space, for example STORE&GO, Rotterdam the Hague Airport or Norsk e-fuel. On the other hand, air-captured CO2 can also be used in the food and beverage industry to make sparkling water or as a fertilizer in greenhouses, which is what happens to the CO2 that we capture in Hinwil, Switzerland.
