Our facilities need energy to power the CO2 collectors: low-temperature heat for the CO2 capture process and electricity for the ventilators.
We are committed to drive down energy consumption as much as possible and only use renewable energy, energy-from-waste, or other waste heat as energy sources.
While operating our facilities requires energy, their carbon footprint is very low: a scientific life cycle assessment that was published by the university RWTH Aachen University in 2021 (on Orca technology) found that a Climeworks plant re-emits less than 10% of the carbon dioxide it captures with the use of low-carbon electricity (see https://www.nature.com/articles/s41560-020-00771-9).
